The access to reach it safely
A crystal fixture over a stairwell is not a job for a kitchen stool.

Al Yaman is one of four historic quarters within Jeddah's old walled city, south of Souk Al Alawi street, with heritage stone and timber houses packed closely together on narrow lanes. Chandeliers hang from old ceilings that may be structurally uncertain, and the wiring behind them is decades old. Cleaning requires absolute caution with deteriorated electrical systems, fragile ceilings and rare pieces that may not survive removal. Planning and site inspection before any work begins is not optional here.
Chandeliers in heritage houses hang from aging ceilings that may be unsound, from wiring that is visibly unsafe, and many have never been cleaned because the risk of removal seemed too high. For the method itself, see our chandelier cleaning service in detail.
Chandeliers in heritage houses hang from old ceilings of uncertain structural integrity. Before removal we inspect the fixing thoroughly. Some old ceiling joinery will not take any stress and removal would bring plaster down. We test loading and sometimes refuse to remove rather than risk damage to historic fabric.
Houses in the old quarter have original wiring, insulation decayed, connections corroded, cables run across wood beams and through walls without conduit. Each house is different and electrical hazards are unpredictable. We inspect before cut-off and plan power access from the furthest circuit breaker away from the work area.
Streets in the old quarter are too narrow for vehicles and toolkits cannot be wheeled. The team arrives together on foot with equipment carried by hand, navigates cramped interior stairs, and plans the job so the chandelier can be moved out and downstairs without getting wedged. Egress planning is as important as access.
A dense historic quarter within the old walled city of Al Balad, with houses built tightly together, lanes too narrow for vehicles, construction from stone, timber and clay dating centuries back, and electrical wiring that is original to each house and rarely updated.
Heritage houses in Al Yaman have old ceilings that may be structurally weak. We inspect the fixing thoroughly before any load or movement.
Electrical wiring in old houses is a primary safety concern. We inspect insulation and connections and cut power carefully from the source, never at the fixture.
Old houses are cramped and lanes are very tight. We photograph carefully before removal to preserve the record, as mental notes alone fail in tight spaces.
Pieces may be brittle from age and humidity. We wash with caution and may elect not to remove at all if the stress of removal poses greater risk than leaving it in place.
Frame and arms may be soft metals that age has weakened. We use only soft brushes and may leave the fixture hanging if removal could damage irreplaceable work.
We test the chandelier with great caution. We do not light it unless absolutely sure it is safe. We discuss every step with the owner and seek approval before any test.
The circuit is switched off before anything is touched, and warm bulbs are given time to cool.
We check how it is built, which crystals are loose, and how it comes apart before removing a thing.
The area under the fixture is covered before we start, so a dropped crystal lands soft and nothing marks the floor or table below.
Where the piece allows, crystals come off and are washed and dried individually.
With the crystals off or aside, the frame, arms, bulb holders and ceiling mount are wiped down, since that is where film and webs hide behind the glass.
Every crystal goes back to its place, the fixture is switched on and checked, and we walk the room with you.
Al Yaman sits about 0.5 km from Al Sahifah and about 0.5 km from Historic Jeddah.

We send a team, not one person, so crystals come off, get washed and go back in one visit, without a lone worker hurrying a fragile piece to finish before dark.
Whether crystals come off or are cleaned in place depends on how the fixture is built.
Nothing is done until the fixture is back together, switched on, and you have seen it throw its light.

The commitment is simple enough to actually keep: we do not leave until the fixture is reassembled, lit, and you have seen it for yourself.
Al Yaman lies south of Al Alawi Street and is identified by Hassan Annani Mosque and Souk Al Alawi, landmarks that locate the quarter within Al Balad. We use these to navigate to the heritage houses and coordinate the team in the narrow lanes that characterise this historic district.
We provide these in Al Yaman too, and more than one can share a single visit.
